Cytosine - Cytosine is one of the 5 main nucleobases used in storing and transporting genetic information within a cell in the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. It is a pyrimidine derivative, with a heterocyclic aromatic ring and two substituents attached (an amine group at position 4 and a keto group at position 2).
CpG site - CpG sites are regions of DNA where a cytosine nucleotide occurs next to a guanine nucleotide in the linear sequence of bases along its length. "CpG" stands for cytosine and guanine separated by a phosphate, which links the two nucleosides together in DNA.
Nitrogenous base - Nitrogenous bases are organic compounds that owe their basic properties to the lone pair of electrons of a nitrogen atom. Typical nitrogenous bases are ammonia (NH3), triethylamine, pyridine, and the nucleobases adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine.
Hybridization probe - ... of DNA (on the order of 100-500 bases) that is denatured (by heating) into single strands and then radioactively labeled, usually with phosphorus (32P or 33P). The radioactive phosphorus is incorporated into one of the bases of DNA (adenine, guanine, cytosine, or thymidine) and these labeled bases are incorporated into the backbone of the DNA strands by incubation with a polymerase enzyme.
