Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System - The Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) is a technologically advanced information processing, display, and telecommunications system that is the cornerstone of the United States National Weather Service's (NWS) modernization and restructuring. AWIPS is an interactive computer system that integrates all meteorological and hydrological data, and all satellite and radar data and enables the forecaster to prepare and issue more accurate and timely forecasts and warnings.
Data assimilation - Data assimilation (DA) is a method used (perhaps most importantly in the weather forecasting process) in which observations of the current (and possibly, past) state of a system are combined with the results from a mathematical model to produce an analysis, which is considered as 'the best' estimate of the current state of the system.
